Barry Hedley — Senior Associate

ATRS is pleased to present Mr Barry Hedley as a senior rail infrastructure engineer, risk manager and safety management systems professional.

 

Barry has over 32 years experience in Australian railway engineering, safety management and railway operations.  Qualified in Civil Engineering and Engineering Maintenance Management, Barry has a wide multi-disciplinary engineering and safety management range of proven expertise gained from extensive construction and rail development project works and from several years managing technical standards for the New South Wales Government rail organisations.

 

Barry was heavily involved in the investigations into the major rail accidents at Glenbrook and Waterfall in NSW, leading both the RailCorp technical investigation and the safety responses to findings by the commissions of inquiry and, as such, has gained a wealth of experience in this area.

 

Barry’s most recent positions have included being a principal consultant and Victorian Operations Manager for Lloyd’s Register Rail, and General Manager Network Safety for Connex Melbourne where he guided the organisation through the development of new risk based safety and environmental management systems, achieving new rail safety accreditation in both.  Prior to this Barry held a range of senior positions within the NSW State Rail Authority, Rail Infrastructure Corporation, and Rail Access Corporation.

 

Barry is a passionate advocate for rail’s future and the development of a new generation of technical and operational people and systems.

 

Barry is a former Board Member of the Rail Co-operative Research Centre and the Rail Industry Safety & Standards Board (RISSB).  He is also a former member of the RISSB Operations Standing Committee & the RISSB Safety Managers Group.

 

Barry’s formal qualifications include a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil), University of NSW, a Graduate Diploma in Maintenance Management, University of Wollongong, and has part completed an MBA at the University of Technology Sydney.  Other qualifications include short courses in Risk, Quality, Environment and Marketing Management.
